What Size Turkey Do I Need?

Not sure how big a turkey you'll need? Choosing the right size depends on how many people you're feeding and whether you'd like some delicious leftovers for Boxing Day. As a general guide, allow approximately 500g of whole turkey per person, including the bones. Turkey crowns contain a higher proportion of breast meat, so you'll generally need less weight per person. Our handy guide below will help you choose the right size for your Christmas gathering.

Approximate weight Serves
4.5-5.4kg 9-10 people
5.5-6.4kg 11-12 people
6.5-7.4kg 13-14 people
7.5-8.4kg 15-16 people
8.5-9.4kg 17-18 people
9.5-10.4kg 19-20 people
10.5-11.5kg 21-23 people

These are approximate portions for a whole turkey. Serving sizes depend on appetites, accompaniments and how many leftovers you'd like. I'd have Frankie’s confirm the portion guide before publishing.

How to Cook the Perfect Roast Turkey

Make your Christmas dinner extra special with five helpful tips from Frankie’s very own Chef Carlos. From preparing and seasoning your turkey to achieving beautifully golden, crispy skin, Carlos shares his advice for a delicious Christmas roast.

1. Dry the Skin - Before seasoning, pat your turkey dry with kitchen paper. Removing excess moisture helps the skin become beautifully golden and crispy during roasting.

2. Season Generously - Don't be shy with the seasoning! Use salt, pepper and your favourite herbs to bring out the natural flavours of your turkey.

3. Add a Little Extra Flavour - A squeeze of lemon juice or a little citrus zest can add a lovely freshness to your turkey, complementing the herbs and seasoning.

4. Take Your Time - Cook your turkey gently, allowing plenty of time for it to roast evenly. Chef Carlos recommends finishing at a medium-high temperature to help achieve beautifully golden skin. Always check that your turkey is thoroughly cooked using a food thermometer before serving.

5. Let It Rest - Once cooked, allow your turkey to rest before carving. This helps the juices redistribute throughout the meat, giving you a more tender, succulent result.
