Spring & Summer Gardening Tips

As the days get longer and the garden begins to flourish, it’s the perfect time to get ahead with your planting and preparation. Our growers, Sam and the team at Frankies Farmshop, have shared their top seasonal tips to help you make the most of your garden this Spring and into Summer. From caring for bulbs to preparing hanging baskets and protecting young plants, these simple steps will help keep your garden healthy, colourful, and full of life.

Care for spring bulbs

Dead head flower bulbs that have faded, but leave the foliage to die down naturally as this will put energy back in to the bulb.

Divide overcrowded bulbs

If your daffodils or other spring bulbs are becoming crowded or producing leaves instead of flowers, it’s time to lift and divide them. This gives each bulb the space it needs to thrive.

Get ahead with summer planting

Start early by buying summer bedding plants and vegetables if you have a warm greenhouse, conservatory, or sunny windowsill. Early preparation means stronger, more established plants when it’s time to move them outside.

Prepare hanging baskets early

Plant up your hanging baskets now so they have time to establish. By the time warmer weather arrives, they’ll be full, healthy, and ready to display — just be sure to protect them from late frosts

Look after your potatoes

Earth up potatoes to protect young shoots from frost and encourage healthy growth. It’s also a good time to plant any remaining varieties.

Care for lawns & wildlife

Regular mowing keeps lawns looking neat, but consider leaving some areas a little longer to support wildlife and encourage biodiversity in your garden.

Be mindful of nesting birds

Before trimming hedges or shrubs, always check for nesting birds. Protecting wildlife is an important part of seasonal garden care.

Plant out with care

By mid-May, many summer bedding plants and vegetables can be planted outdoors and baskets hung up. However, keep an eye on the weather and protect plants with horticultural fleece if colder conditions return.

Water wisely

Water your plants early in the morning or later in the evening to reduce evaporation and make the most of every drop, especially as temperatures rise.
